70 Dogs need to be fostered or in adoptive homes by April 24th, $400 gift card for fostering offered

PHILADELPHIA, PA - ACCT Philly, which is Philadelphia's only intake animal shelter and animal care and control provider, is asking for the community's help as it has to create a second shelter to temporarily house dogs exposed to canine flu for up to a month.

Some of the many dogs up for adoption

ACCT Philly consulted with national disease control experts, and will need to separate the exposed dogs from incoming dogs until they are “cleared” of the virus, which can take up to a month. With an average of 100 dogs coming into the shelter each week, the nonprofit cannot close intake services for a month as no other organization is in a position to absorb those animals. As a result, it must house dogs in a separate space in the building from the incoming dogs, and the temporary space is only able to accommodate 50 dogs. Currently housing 120 dogs, this means that more than 70 dogs will need to find placement by Monday April 24, in addition to the others coming into the shelter.

HOW TO HELP:

Foster

The organization is seeking individuals who can foster a large dog (dogs over 40 pounds) for a month, and ideally don’t have another dog. Thanks to a generous donor, individuals who foster for a month will receive a $400 Visa gift card at the end of the month, as other shelters across the country in similar positions have seen this work very well.

SIGN UP HERE:

Adopt

All adoption fees have been waived for dogs over 40 pounds April 16th through April 23rd. Dogs are fully vaccinated, microchipped and spayed/neutered, and adopters will receive a free bag of food, a free vet exam and voucher for $250 of vet services, an offer for discounted pet insurance as well as virtual dog training through GoodPup. Please note dog meets with resident dogs are not possible due to exposure concerns.

Donate

This effort is not inexpensive, and ACCT is a nonprofit organization that relies heavily on donations to support this effort and all the other work it does year-round. Donations can be made online or mailed to ACCT Philly 111 W Hunting Park Ave Philadelphia PA 19140

ACCT Philly is also looking for donations of chest freezers to store enrichment, and two mini refrigerators for vaccines, as well as hot dogs, spray cheese and pill pockets to help get dogs to take their medication.

Please e-mail development@acctphilly.org if you can help.
