Allentown School District: Breakfast Options for Students Expanded

Elementary students in the Allentown School District are now provided with more breakfast options to get through them.

The Allentown School District announced recently a revised and expanded menu that provides more options for the 8,000 elementary students the opportunity to receive a meal.

The issue arose from many ASD schools having small cafeterias that was limiting for all students to have a morning meal before class started.

The expanded menu will include:

  • Grab and go bags

  • Breakfast delivery into classrooms for every child

  • A "Second chance breakfast" for students who are late for school

Each meal will include:

  • Fresh Fruit

  • Juice

  • Whole Grain Items

  • Yogurt

Studies state that a balanced breakfast can boost students’ performance in schools, with improvements to attendance, lateness, discipline and academics.

ASD also states eating a daily balanced breakfast could save families money and time, which will result in improved overall student health and fewer visits to the nurses’ office.

According to the ASD website, 89.1% of district families are denoted as low income, and 100% receive free/reduced lunch.
