Child luring incident in South Heidelberg Township was misunderstanding



Wermersville Borough, PA


The South Heidelberg Township Police had received a report of a suspicious/child luring incident this past Saturday. Subsequently, the suspicious person and vehicle were located.


According to the update by the police department, the man was attempting to return a bag to the juveniles. The bag had been left behind at a Family Dollar.


Video evidence confirmed the events at the Family Dollar and SHPD confirmed the male’s version of events with the Cashier.

PRESS RELEASE: Incident Number: 45-23-01699 Date and Time: 5/20/2023 at approximately 12:30p.

Location: 100 block of West Penn Avenue, Wernersville Borough

Incident Type: Suspicious Activity / Person

Incident Description: SHPD received a report of an attempted child luring incident.

On May 20, 2023 at approximately 1716 hours, SHPD obtained video footage of the involved vehicle. SHPD Patrol Officers located the vehicle and identified the registered owner.


At 1838 hours the registered owner contacted SHPD. Patrol Officers interviewed the male and he gave the following account:


He was leaving the Family Dollar and the cashier was out front of the store looking around for two juveniles that left a bag at the register. The Casher did not see the juvenile and told the male what happened. The Cashier re-entered the store.


The male entered his van and drove west on Penn Ave. While heading west he saw the two juveniles walking on Penn Avenue.


The male said he pulled next to the juveniles and told them they left a bag at the counter at the Family Dollar. The male said he continued on and had no further contact with the juveniles.


Video evidence confirmed the events at the Family Dollar.

SHPD confirmed the male’s version of events with the Cashier.


On May 21, 2023 SHPD reinterviewed the juveniles. The juveniles confirmed that they left a bag at either the Family Dollar or a Pizza shop.

SHPD confirmed that no items were left at the Pizza Shop.

SHPD believes this was a misunderstanding between the two parties and the juveniles were not in any danger.

SHPD would like to thank the citizens of Wernersville Borough for their assistance in bringing this investigation to a fast conclusion.
