Wildfires on island of Maui deadliest natural disaster in state history, officials say

According to a report by ABC News, officials say the wildfires that erupted on the Hawaii island of Maui on Aug. 8 have become the deadliest natural disaster in state history.

Much of the historic town of Lahaina has been "destroyed," officials said. Thousands of residential and commercial buildings have burned to the ground.

The blazes spread rapidly due to very dry conditions stemming from a drought combined with powerful winds, according to the news report.


Dozens are confirmed dead, with even more missing.
