DJ Casper, "Cha Cha Slide" Creator, has passed away at age 58 after battle with cancer

Willie Perry Jr., known as "DJ Casper", a renowned disc jockey from Chicago and best known for the song passed away Monday evening at age 58. In 2016, he was diagnosed with renal and neuroendocrine cancer. His death was confirmed by his relative, Quita D. Perry..



Casper originally created the song as an aerobic exercise for his nephew who worked in a fitness club.


Originally called "Casper Slide Pt. 1," DJ Casper's song gained popularity in his hometown of Chicago and was later picked up by M.O.B. Records. As it continued to gain momentum, the title was changed to "Casper Slide Pt. 2." In 2004, the song reached the top spot on the U.K. singles chart and was ultimately renamed "Cha Cha Slide."

"Casper was a fun-loving, giving person," the DJ's wife said in a statement to ABC7. "He was a genuine, family-oriented man. He loved Chicago with all his heart. He will be greatly missed."
