A magnitude 2.2 earthquake was felt in parts of New York and New Jersey early Friday morning according to the U.S. Geological Survey.
The earthquake occurred at 2 a.m. around northwest Yonkers and along the Hudson River in New York, and was felt in New Jersey, according to Randy Baldwin, a geophysicist at the USGS’s National Information Center in Golden, Colorado.
USGS received 200 alerts on its website from people who felt the earthquake, most of which were reported within a 15-mile radius from the epicenter, Baldwin said.
A Tsunami Warning had also been issued over the South Pacific on Friday, around three hours after a 7.7 magnitude earthquake struck the region. People living in that region were advised to avoid coastal areas after US Geological Survey (USGS) said a 7.7 magnitude earthquake with a depth of 38 kilometers (23 miles) struck the region.
“Based on all available data, the tsunami threat from this earthquake has now passed,” the center said in a report.
