Tonight's full moon will take place at 2:31 p.m. EDT.
According to the Old Farmer's Almanac, August's full moon is sometimes known as the Sturgeon Moon.
The name "sturgeon" is believed to have originated from both European colonists and Algonquian-speaking peoples in northeastern North America. This is because sturgeon are native to both continents.
Did you know?
Most of the time, the full moon isn't perfectly full. We always see the same side of the moon, but part of it is in shadow, due to the moon's rotation. The only time the moon is 100% full is when the moon, Earth, and the sun are perfectly aligned. That alignment produces a lunar eclipse.
Enjoy tonight's full moon and make sure to submit your full-moon photographs to WGOLV.
